A book of Conway Stewart numbers - page 13
Boxed Pen and Pencil Sets
Identification of the boxed sets is extremely difficult. Most boxed sets no longer have the set number-sticker on them, and perhaps some never had one. Some boxes have a circular number-sticker on the bottom and others an oblong one. Others have a gold colored nib-shaped sticker with the box number on the nib. I have found identical box shapes with nib-shaped stickers bearing different numbers, indicating that the same boxes, bearing different pen sets would be numbered differently. Some Dinkie sets have the number actually imprinted on the inside of the box lid. Conway Stewart "posters" and "flyers" have helped a lot. However, the following list is only tentative. If anybody out there can help me with this section, please contact me!
Note: Many boxes have been separated from their pens over the course of time, and other pens have been replaced later to make up sets. Bear in mind that the pens inside boxed sets may not be the original ones.
Please Note!
In the No. 68, Autumn 2003 edition of the Journal of the Writing Equipment Society, Barry Rose wrote a very comprehensive article on Conway Stewart boxed sets. He provided a numbered list and numerous beautiful illustrations. He acknowledged the help of Stephen Hull. With his permission I have added sets in his list that I myself have not recorded. To distinguish them I have listed these set numbers in red while the rest are in marroon.
Key to Boxed Sets
Use the key to find your set. Its fun if you're a taxonomist! No - not a taxi-driver.
I have prepared a very simple "key" to enable you to identify which set your box belongs to. This is because most boxes no longer have their set-number sticker on them.
The key is very simple. All you have to do is to follow the dual choices until by a process of elimination you reach the correct set (lets hope!).
Go for it! However, if you stumble by the wayside - that may be because the key is not yet foolproof, and since I do not have all the sets in my collection I don't know how to describe them accurately.
